What is a Job to be done ?

The job to be done approach offers a unique lens for viewing the people you serve. Seek on what people try to achieve, in a given circumstance

A Customer segment will hire a solution to get a job done. It’s important to focus on what they want and need instead of the solution or product.

A definition could be:

The process of reaching an objective under given circumstances >

  1. Process: Highlights the dynamic nature of getting a job done.
  2. Objective: Reflects the functional nature of a job. It differs from a goal that is usually associated with broader aspirations.
  3. Circumstances: The given context in which a job has to be done.

The three pitfalls:

  1. Associated to a technology, a solution or a product.
  2. Not getting the right level of granularity. A job to be done is part of an Innovation scope.
  3. Not making the difference between the objective and the outcome
