Innovation scope

Is the right level of altitude. The first question you need to ask yourself is - where do you want to innovate ?

  • You can innovate your entire corporate strategy
  • Or focus on solving a very narrow problem

If you identify a scope or an interesting Jobs to be done, ask yourself:

  • Why ? -> This will lead you to your Customer segment aspirations
  • How ? -> This will give you the different steps of getting a job done

Writing a Jobs to be done at a right level:

  1. Specificity Too broad vs too narrow.

    1. Too broad: “I want to be successful”
    2. Too narrow: “I want to use a blue pen to write a note”
      1. What is the underlying need here?
  2. Focus on core need - Fundamental task the customer is trying to achieve.

    1. “When I need to communicate quickly with my team, I want to send a concise message so I can ensure everyone is aligned”
  3. Incorporate context - Situational details that provide clarity on when and why the job is triggered

    1. “When I’m preparing for a presentation, I want to organize my slides effectively so I can deliver a clear and impactful message.”
  4. Highlight desired outcomes - Articulate the benefits or outcomes the customer expects to achieve by completing the job. 2. “When I’m preparing my weekly meals, I want to create a balanced menu so I can maintain a healthy diet and save time during the week”

  5. Emotional and Social aspects - Acknowledge any emotional or social dimensions that may influence the job

Also, keep in mind the Innovation scope filter to be sure to get a high potential scope and problem.
